Digital IMAX opens in Merritt Island, Florida
March 25, 2011 – 2:46 pmFlorida Today reports:
The first IMAX theater in Brevard outside of Kennedy Space Center will open today at Cobb Theatres’ Merrit Square 16.
The digital IMAX system that will show the action movie “Sucker Punch” is a more commercially accessible, smaller-screen version of the large format, film-based technology typically found at major exhibition venues such as the KSC.
Merritt Square 16 is one of four Cobb theaters where IMAX screens are being added. The Birmingham, Ala.-based Cobb, which operates 18 locations and 222 screens in the United States, won’t disclose the cost of the IMAX retrofits but the did say upgrades include adding more speakers, replacing the older screens with floor-to-ceiling models and reconfiguring seating.
The IMAX theater, as with other new technologies at multiplexes these days, will cost a bit more to experience: A $4 surcharge will be added to the regular price of tickets, taking a regular adult admission to $13.
