Marcus adding 3D theater to former IMAX location
March 11, 2009 – 3:35 pmMarcus Theaters will be adding a 3D theater to its Columbus Crosswoods Cinemas, a former IMAX theater site. Columbus Business First reports:
The theater chain, a division of Milwaukee-based Marcus Corp. (NYSE:MCS), said one of the new screens will be at its Crosswoods Cinemas in northern Columbus. The company already has a 3-D screen, one of 14 nationwide before the new deal, in its Pickerington Cinemas location.
Marcus had operated an IMAX screen at the Crosswoods location starting in 1998, but closed it in 2004 because not enough movies and moviegoers were drawn to the concept. The super-wide-screen IMAX format offered an immersive movie experience based on dramatic changes to projection technology and theater geometry that maximized the field of view.
The 3-D format, however, is catching on and Marcus sees it as a burgeoning force in the industry.
