Cosmic Voyage screening, lectures to celebrate Year of Astronomy

2009′s International Year of Astronomy kicked off in Victoria, BC with screenings of the film Cosmic Voyage coupled with lectures and special presentations. The Victoria News reports:
In 2009’s International Year of Astronomy, [professor of physics and astronomy Julio] Navarro and [director of the Herzberg Institute James] Hesser are involved in projects helping to further educate and inspire the public to look up at the beauty above them.
Navarro was scheduled to kick off the Galileo Lecturers series yesterday (April 7) as one of four speakers following up the 6 and 7 p.m. screenings of the IMAX film Cosmic Voyage with a brief lecture and a question-and-answer session.
Subsequent presentations include Galaxies “Like Grains of Sand” (Dr. Luc Simard, April 14), Supernovae and the Mystery of “Dark Energy” (Dr. Chris Pritchet, April 21) and Black Holes: A Ninety Year Journey (Dr. Laura Ferrarese, April 28).
Weather permitting, the Royal Astronomical Society will have their telescopes on hand following the second screening at about 7:45 p.m. to give audience members a closer look at the heavens.
