Lakeport locals assist with Great Lakes film

In support of Mysteries of the Great Lakes‘ run at the Detroit Science Center, the Detroit Free Press profiles locals Kathy Johnson and Greg Lashbrook who helped with the making of the film.

The residents of Lakeport, near Port Huron, know this leg of the lakes well, having worked there on commercial diving, construction and rescue teams since the early 1990s. More important, they are avid photographers and videographers who supply underwater images for government and private projects.

Their work on “Mysteries of the Great Lakes,” which opens Saturday at the Detroit Science Center, is evident throughout the film. Though the bulky IMAX camera was operated by someone else, they scouted filming locations and coordinated with the Coast Guard and freighter traffic for a climactic sequence in which sturgeon spawn near the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.
