ILM’s Scott Farrar talks rendering Transformers 2 for IMAX

The Daily Telegraph talks with Industrial Light and Magic’s Scott Farrar on his work on rendering Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for IMAX:

On the effects side, Farrar certainly had his work cut out for him, with a much larger production and even more robots to create.

The film also had to have enough resolution to be shown on gigantic Imax cinema screens.

“To render an Imax frame, that’s eight times larger with eight times more information,” he says.

“There are scenes in the Imax version where Optimus Prime up on the big screen is actual size — what he really would be.”

Despite all the Transformers being created inside a computer, Farrar says there is still just as much work to be done as if they were being built in the physical world.

“People think it’s computer graphics but it is no different than if you go into your garage and start making pieces,” he says.

“We can make duplicate pieces, yes, but a shoulder piece or a shin piece – all of those things have to be created and painted.

“It’s not unlike building it in the physical world, only it’s being done by computer.”
