Public Opinion: Virginia aquarium opens its new Restless Planet renovation
December 1, 2009 – 7:13 pmChambergsburg Public Opinion reports:
If you’ve been good all year, you may be up for a short trip down the shore.
Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center will open its new Restless Planet renovation on Saturday.
The renovation cost $25 million and opened 12,000 square feet of exhibits and aquariums. A series of 36 hands-on activities will demonstrate the natural processes that shaped Virginia’s current landscape.
Restless Planet features four habitats from around the world that would have existed in Virginia millions of years ago. The habitat areas are a malaysian peat swamp, a coastal Saharan desert, a Red Sea habitat and an Indonesian Flores Island habitat. The habitats recreate the look, feel and smell of those environments, as well as showcase many of the animals that adapted to those habitats. The aquarium has more than doubled its animal collection by adding 6,000 new animals (367 new species) into these habitats for visitors to explore.
