Fort Worth Star-Telegram: Colleyville IMAX theater collects city incentives in advance of ‘Avatar’ premiere
December 18, 2009 – 2:50 pmThe Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports on Colleyville, Texas’ IMAX Theater:
The release of a new movie from the maker of Titanic has prompted the Colleyville City Council to help out a once-sinking movie theater.
The council agreed unanimously Tuesday to give the Colleyville Cinema Grille and IMAX Theatre a $35,000 advance in economic incentives that the company was previously due to receive over several years.
Schulman Partners, the theater’s operator, said it needed the money because of expenses related to securing the exhibition rights and promotion of Avatar, the new 3-D epic film from James Cameron that comes out Friday. The Colleyville theater is the only one in the western side of the Metroplex to screen the film in IMAX 3-D, according to IMAX.com.
“I see this as a great opportunity, because this is supposed to be [a] blockbuster,” Mayor David Kelly said. “It’s going to bring a lot of people in who may have not been into our area to see this film.”
Mark Schulman, with Schulman Partners, said he is going to screen the movie for 48 hours straight beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday and plans to advertise the theater’s screenings on TV and radio.
