WSJ: Imax Eyes Doubling-Up Theaters In Some U.S. Zones

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Imax Corp.’s (IMAX) recent box-office numbers suggest the U.S. could support a larger number of theaters than the large-format movie company originally envisioned.

The advent of its lower-cost digital system and joint-venture theater initiative has resulted in a huge expansion of its network recently. Imax installed about 120 systems in 2009, with another 50-55 on tap in 2010 based on its backlog.

While Imax typically gives customers exclusivity over certain geographic zones, it’s not for an indefinite period.
