Knoxville News Sentinel reports on Regal Entertainment Group’s plan to equip 1,500 of its screens with 3D technology. Their partnership with RealD has already equipped 130 Regal screens with 3D:

In the theater and film industries, 3-D and IMAX are viewed as the latest innovations that can continue to attract moviegoers to the movies in large numbers. Increasingly, theater operators are competing against home theater systems, but they believe 3-D and IMAX show the most promise to increase revenue. While IMAX technology shows films on larger-than-standard screens, giving moviegoers a wider view of the action, 3-D screenings offer customers a vivid picture that gives the impression that the action jumps off the screen.

Regal is spending millions of dollars to update its theaters with digital, 3-D and IMAX equipment.
