WSJ: Original Imax Theaters Play Up Size Amid Surge In Big Screens

May 27, 2010 – 12:05 pm

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at original IMAX theaters vs. the recent crop of Large Format screens from other theater brands such as Cinemark and Regal:

Some giant movie screens are more giant than others.

That’s the message moviegoers, who have many big-screen movie options now, are hearing from the operators of Imax Corp.’s (IMAX) original theaters, despite the misgivings of Imax itself.

Imax is the pioneer of massive movie screens, but its network remained limited until the advent of its smaller digital system in mid-2008. Imax had 172 digital theaters installed at the end of March, and expects to have 245-255 by year-end.

Its success has spurred Imax customers to develop their own large-format copycat brands.
