Documentary also takes home Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, Best Score and Best Marketing Campaign Awards

October 13, 2016, Laguna Beach, CA“National Parks Adventure” took home top honors at the Giant Screen Cinema Association’s Achievement Awards, winning Best Film of 2016 in the Short Subject category. The awards were presented at the GSCA’s annual worldwide conference and trade show, held Oct. 4 to 7 in Toronto.

The film also received achievement awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design and Best Original Score, as well as Best Marketing Campaign by a Distributor. Additionally, the film was named in connection with the award for Best Film Launch by a Theatre.

“The response to ‘National Parks Adventure’ has been nothing short of outstanding, and we are honored to receive this recognition by the giant screen industry,” said Shaun MacGillivray, the film’s producer and President of MacGillivray Freeman Films. “The film is inspiring millions of moviegoers to fall in love with the national parks all over again, and to recognize the importance of preserving these untamed wildernesses for generations to come.”

Narrated by Robert Redford, “National Parks Adventure” was filmed in more than 30 national parks, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Arches and Glacier and in lesser known parks such as Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

‘National Parks Adventure’ celebrates not only the Centennial of America’s national parks, but wild landscapes everywhere,” said Greg MacGillivray, the film’s director and Chairman of MacGillivray Freeman Films. “These natural environments are an essential part of the human spirit, and we are so pleased the film is encouraging our audiences to discover the beauty and sanctuary of nature’s treasures wherever they are.”

In addition to the film’s artistic success, the film has been a commercial powerhouse. “National Parks Adventure” has generated more than $18 million in worldwide ticket sales since February, making it the highest-grossing documentary of 2016 (for both giant screen and Hollywood-made documentaries).

The film was produced in association with Brand USA, the destination-marketing organization for the United States.

“This movie has been an ideal vehicle for showcasing and inspiring visitation to our national parks and the Great Outdoors experiences that await international visitors in the United States,” said Chris Thompson, President and CEO of Brand USA. “In fact, exit surveys have indicated that 81% of those people who have watched the film are either “much more likely” or “somewhat more likely” to visit the United States after seeing the film.”

“National Parks Adventure” premiered at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History on Feb. 10, and then opened in more than 100 museums and science centers in the U.S. and around the world. The film continues to open in new markets and is anticipated to play in theatres throughout 2017 and beyond.

IMAX CHALLENGES STUDENT FILMMAKERS TO CREATE DOCUMENTARIES THAT DRIVE GLOBAL AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

October 11, 2016 – 1:32 pm | Permalink

A wide-ranging effort with UN Environment to inspire young filmmakers to address challenges through film

NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) today launched the first component of its In Focus program to showcase the work of young filmmakers and encourage them to create content that inspires audiences to improve the planet. Specifically, IMAX has tasked student filmmakers with developing short documentaries to raise awareness of some of today’s most pressing environmental, societal and economic issues. IMAX will award $5,000 grants to four high schools and a non-profit film workshop selected by the All-American High School Film Festival (AAHSFF) as exemplary programs.

IMAX formally announced the grant recipients last weekend during the 2016 AAHSFF Teen Indie Awards held in New York City, which is the world’s largest annual festival for high school filmmakers. Each of the selected programs has been asked to produce an eight-minute documentary, as well as related content for social media, including Instagram and Snapchat posts.

The recipients of IMAX grants for the 2016-2017 school year are:

– Woodrow Wilson High School, Washington, D.C.
– University School of Nova Southeastern University, a college preparatory school in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
– Ballard High School’s digital filmmaking program in Seattle
– Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego
– Mythic Bridge, public non-profit youth filmmaking workshop in New York City

Executive Director Tom Oliva says, “IMAX represents the pinnacle of film industry achievement and technology. To have a company at their level supporting young filmmakers and immersive arts education is truly incredible. Perhaps more incredible, is that this opportunity offers students a chance to affect social change on a wide scale.”

Partnering with the UN Environment, the In Focus initiative is a component of IMAX Big Picture, the corporate social responsibility program launched in March to leverage the power of film to mobilize action and effect positive change. The selected recipients – which represent a diverse cross-section of students – will create short films that raise awareness of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as told through the lens of today’s youth.

“Movies have always had an outsized impact on audiences around the world. For more than a century, great films have shown an unparalleled ability to influence people, build cultural bridges and drive action,” said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond. “Awarding these grants is a natural extension of IMAX’s origins in documentaries that have educated and informed generations of movie-goers. As a longtime leader in immersive entertainment, IMAX has an obligation to cultivate young filmmakers and help them promote change by immersing audiences in important issues that will affect the quality of life for generations to come.”

Each of the selected student film programs will create original content to specifically address at least one of the following UN sustainable development goals:

– Climate action, which calls for efforts to stem greenhouse gas emissions, which scientists cite as a major factor in the earth’s changing weather patterns, rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

– Life below water, encouraging people, enterprises and nations to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources. According to the UN, some 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.

– Life on land, encouraging people, enterprises and nations to sustainably manage forests, and halt and reverse land degradation. According to the UN, forests account for a third of the earth’s surface, highlighting the global imperative to reverse deforestation.

“Our environment is an unlimited source of incredibly powerful, engaging and inspiring stories, and we owe it to the planet to tell these to as wide an audience as possible,” said UN Environment chief Erik Solheim. “I congratulate the grant recipients, and hope to see their work on the big screen.”

The UN’s 17 development goals – adopted by 193 UN-member countries in September 2015 – range from eradicating poverty, promoting gender equality and protecting the environment to ensuring universal access to clean water, modern energy and quality education. UN Environment is the world’s leading environmental authority.

“This effort provides an opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to elevate their work to a higher platform and work with new film technology, while encouraging them to use film to effect change and social improvement,” said Gelfond.

In addition to the rollout of In Focus on a pilot basis in the U.S., IMAX is considering expanding the program to Europe, Africa,Asia and elsewhere, in a joint effort with UNEP.

In March, IMAX in partnership with UN Environment hosted a panel discussion on “The Power of Film to Effect Change” at The Michelle & Kevin Douglas IMAX Theatre and Immersive Media Lab at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. In April, IMAX hosted a New York City premiere of A Beautiful Planet, and in June, in recognition of World Environment Day, the company hosted 15 free screenings of the film worldwide. IMAX also funded film premieres in Nairobi to kick off the 2016 UN Environment Assembly and, later, in Rio De Janeiro, in conjunction with UN Environment’s Green Passport initiative.

IMAX AND ODEON & UCI CINEMAS TO LAUNCH FIRST IMAX VR™ CENTRE IN EUROPE

October 11, 2016 – 1:07 pm | Permalink

Groundbreaking Agreement Ushers in Next-Generation of Immersive Entertainment Experiences to ODEON’s Printworks Multiplex in England

LONDON – October 11, 2016 –IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) today announced an agreement with leading European exhibitor, ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group, to install the first pilot IMAX VR™ centre in Europe at its Printworks multiplex location in Manchester, England. The centre, which the parties are planning to open by the end of 2016, will deliver guests immersive, multi-dimensional VR experiences, including entertainment content and games.

The IMAX VR Experience features a unique combination of premium technology that lets users see, feel, move and play in new worlds in a powerfully immersive and realistic way, much like IMAX® theatres offer moviegoers a differentiated and best-in-class film experience. IMAX is working with Acer and Starbreeze AB to incorporate next-generation headset-mounted display (HMD) technology that offers industry-leading resolution and an extra-wide peripheral field of view.

IMAX will provide the centre an ongoing array of new, premium interactive content experiences that are expected to range between 5 and 15 minutes in length each. The Company is in advanced stages with several content developers, including Hollywood studios and gaming publishers, to produce and distribute high-quality VR experiences to its centres. IMAX also plans to eventually incorporate premium content resulting from the cinema-grade virtual reality camera that it is currently developing in partnership with Google.

“For nearly 50 years, IMAX’s mission has been to give audiences – of all ages and across generations – a reason to get off their couches and leave the comfort of home to go out to the cinema. Today’s agreement with ODEON marks an important milestone in our continued effort to deliver differentiated entertainment experiences – now through location-based VR,” said IMAX Corp. CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “We are extremely pleased with the significant progress we’ve made on this initiative in this short period of time and believe this commitment from such a significant European exhibitor is a testament to the interest and potential of this offering. ODEON is a longtime partner that shares our vision in delivering guests the ultimate in premium experiences and we look forward to ushering in the next evolution of immersive entertainment with this test centre.”

The centre will employ a new modular design – proprietary to IMAX – that will consist of several “pods” to allow multiple players to enjoy interactive, exciting, moveable VR experiences. The pods, which are designed to optimize user mobility and interaction in virtual environments, can be adapted for specific content experiences – whether single or multi-user.

“We’re always looking for new ways to give our guests an even more immersive experience, so are very excited to be hosting Europe’s first IMAX VR centre at ODEON Printworks” said Paul Donovan, CEO of ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group. “We have a longstanding close relationship with IMAX which creates unforgettable experiences in many of our cinemas across Europe, so we are delighted to be alongside them again, at the cutting edge of innovation, to introduce and pilot awesome new technology which will delight our guests.”

IMAX is in the process of launching its first showroom and pilot IMAX VR centre in Los Angeles and is targeting to open additional test facilities in China, Japan, the U.S., the Middle East and Western Europe in the coming months. The Company plans to use these pilot locations to test several factors including the overall customer experience, pricing models and the types of content featured. If successful, the intent is to roll out the concept globally to select multiplexes as well as commercial locations such as shopping centers and tourist destinations.

For Expo ’67 in Montreal, Ferguson directed the multi-screen, multi-projector film Polar Life, which viewers watched while seated on a central rotating turntable in the middle of 11 screens. The film was so successful that Ferguson, along with fellow filmmaker Roman Kroiter, had the idea of creating a movie theater with a similar immersive experience but with a single giant screen using only one projector. To achieve that, Ferguson and Kroiter recruited high school friend and businessman Robert Kerr, and engineer William Shaw, also a high school friend, to develop the camera, projection system, and theater configuration. Their IMAX (Maximum Image) system debuted at Expo ’70 in Osaka, Japan, with the first-ever IMAX film, Tiger Child. With a 15 perf/70mm film frame that was nearly 10 times larger than conventional 35mm film, the bright, clear, steady, and giant images resulted in a revolutionary immersive theater experience.

Ferguson has continued to make giant screen films throughout his career as director, producer, writer, and cinematographer, and his films have been seen by millions of people around the world. He was instrumental in getting IMAX cameras into space and fueling the dreams of would-be astronauts. Susan Helms credits the film The Dream Is Alive for inspiring her to become an astronaut, and she appears in the IMAX documentary Space Station 3D.

Ferguson’s IMAX filmography includes Tiger Child (1970), North of Superior (1971), Circus World (1974), Man Belongs to Earth (1974), Snow Job (1974), Ocean (1977), Hail Columbia! (1982), The Dream Is Alive (1985), Blue Planet (1990), Journey to the Planets (1993), Into the Deep (1994), Destiny in Space (1994), L5: First City in Space (1996), Mission to Mir (1997), Space Station 3D (2002), Deep Sea 3D (2006), Under the Sea 3D (2009), Hubble 3D (2010), and A Beautiful Planet (2016).

“We are so honored to present the first GSCA Outstanding Achievement Award to Graeme Ferguson,” says GSCA Executive Director Tammy Seldon. “He has inspired an entire industry and countless viewers around the world for decades.”

“We respect and thank him for his artistic vision and passion,” says GSCA board member Diane Carlson of Pacific Science Center. “Simply put, without Graeme Ferguson, we would not have the industry we now have.”

“I have admired Graeme ever since I first entered the giant screen industry,” says GSCA Board Chair Gordon Stalans of the Tennessee Aquarium. “The films he has brought to our audiences are outstanding and impactful. But even more than his work product, I admire the way Graeme goes about conducting his business in a quiet, humble way but with the unwavering determination to do the job and do it right. That is the mark of a true giant in any industry.”

The annual GSCA Achievement Awards honor excellence in giant screen filmmaking, marketing, and lifelong learning and are presented during the GSCA International Conference and Trade Show. The 2016 conference is October 4-7 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, hosted by the Cineplex Scotiabank IMAX Theatre and Ontario Science Centre. The conference, which is attended by giant screen industry professionals from around the world, includes screenings of new films, films in production, projects in development, professional development sessions, a technical session and trade show. Weeklong Engagement Marks the First Time All Eight Films Will Screen in IMAX

Punctuates Global Fan Event on Oct. 13 Celebrating A Return to J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

LOS ANGELES – Oct. 3, 2016 – In anticipation of the global IMAX release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them beginning the weekend of November 18, IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that all eight Harry Potter films will screen for the first time in domestic IMAX locations for an exclusive one-week engagement beginning October 13. The event, which will build on the growing excitement surrounding J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World franchise, marks the first time both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX® format and released in IMAX® theatres.

Kicking off the weeklong Harry Potter engagement will be a global fan event on Oct. 13 celebrating the upcoming release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Fans attending the event at select IMAX theatres in the U.S. and internationally will be treated to a never-before-seen reel from the much-anticipated new film, as well as in-person appearances by talent from the film at two IMAX locations in London and Los Angeles, a live Q&A and more.

The Harry Potter engagement will screen in IMAX® 2D and also feature additional content from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, including the exclusive reel from the fan event and specially recorded greetings from star Eddie Redmayne and other talent.

To date, the Harry Potter franchise—which collectively, among the last six films, has grossed approximately $216 million in IMAX theatres worldwide—stands as one of the most successful film series ever released in IMAX. In addition to the first two films in the franchise (mentioned above), the remaining installments include (in order): Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Parts 1 & 2 — all of which received an IMAX release.

Harry Potter is one of the most beloved film franchises of all time and is incredibly important to the history of IMAX. Therefore, being able to offer each installment—especially the initial two for the very first time in IMAX—makes this a truly magical event for fans,” said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp.

Tickets will be available by means of four separate admission packages: Single Ticket; Day Access (admittance to three or more shows in a single day); Four-Show Access (admittance to four shows any time, any day); and Festival Access (unlimited admittance throughout the event). Packages offered and pricing may vary by theatre.

Event tickets are on sale online and at participating IMAX theatres. Visit IMAX.com/HarryPotter for additional event details, all movie showtimes, and to purchase tickets.

The IMAX release of each film will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
